Are you looking to update your wallpaper but aren’t sure of the process? Wallpaper removal and installation go hand-in-hand to create a finished result that is aesthetically pleasing.
What is the Process of Wallpaper Removal?
When removing wallpaper from walls in the home, it’s important to first prepare the wall. This means taking everything off the walls including frames, hanging pictures, vent covers, furniture, and other things hanging from the wall. Also when wallpaper is removed, it can lead to splattering water or chemicals, so for the protection of your floor, it’s important to put down cloth or plastic tarps.
Professional carpenters will make sure that there are trash cans nearby so all chemicals can be safely disregarded. To protect an electrical outlet on the wall, carpenters will cover it completely with painter’s tape to keep any kind of paper from touching the outlet and potentially causing a fire.
For Liquid Wallpaper Removal
Liquid wallpaper removers contain wetting agents that will dissolve the old adhesive of your wallpaper. Before using liquid remover, water-resistant wallpaper should be scored (creating tiny holes in the paper) so that it will be easier for the wallpaper to be removed. Then, a carpenter will apply the liquid remover with a spray bottle for quick coverage over a large area, and use a sponge or other tool in corners or places where there is a need for precision. Once the remover has softened the adhesive the paper will need to be peeled off with a paint scraper or putty knife.
For Gel Wallpaper Removal
For gel wallpaper removal, the process is similar to liquid remover. The wallpaper needs to be perforated before the application to allow chemicals to penetrate and weaken the adhesive. However, the one advantage of using gel removal over liquid is that it is less messy.
What is the Process of Wallpaper Installation?
When a carpenter installs wallpaper they will first prep the wall; this could mean painting over darker colors, sanding down any areas with lumps of paint, and filling nail holes with spackle. Then, they will use a pencil and straight edge to make a vertical straight line down your wall to mark where the panel of the wallpaper will go. Then they will measure the wall so they can trim the wallpaper down to a certain amount that fits the wall.
A roller brush will be used to apply an even coat of paste to the wall and the first panel of wallpaper will be put up. A smoothing tool or hands will be used to smoothen out the bubbles. This step will be followed for each panel. After all panels are applied, the carpenter will trim excess paper from the wall.
