What’s Better for Your House, Wallpaper or Paint?

October 12, 2023

It’s time to end the eons-long debate of deciding which is better – wallpaper or paint? It all comes down to personal preference, but we do offer a breakdown of the different pros and cons of each one. If you’re looking to update your house and are currently stuck in the back and forth with choosing between the two, we can help. Read on to decide what factors are most important to you, whether that be price or durability, and make the best decision for you and your home.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper used to be considered an outdated fashion, but now, it’s making a trendy comeback thanks to popular demand. Offered in a plethora of new styles and modern designs, it’s definitely not your grandma’s wallpaper and is a solid choice for using in your home update.

Cost

There is no definitive cost to be put on wallpaper, but it definitely is considered a pricey method. On average, a single roll of wallpaper can cost anywhere from $25-$35. This can increase or decrease based on customization, size, design, and type of wallpaper. Certain materials such as vinyl-coated are less expensive than others like fabric-coated. Additionally, in order for wallpaper to retain its charm, installation is recommended to guarantee the look you’re going for.

Durability

Wallpaper is often praised for its durability of 15 years, and often much longer. It can withstand various situations and many people swear by it for their house needs. A few things to consider; when wallpaper gets damaged (whether that be wear and tear peeling, a rip, or an accidental pen or marker mark) the entire section will need to be replaced. This can get expensive and time consuming if you have to do it often, but if you’re confident in your ability to maintain it, wallpaper can outlast just about any wall covering material.

Selection

One of the biggest reasons people often choose wallpaper is due to the ease with which you can accomplish an accent wall or a specific design. Obviously wallpaper can come in almost any pattern you could imagine and that saves a significant amount of time. That being said, if you’re one to love change in your house, it’s an expensive and time consuming venture to switch out wallpaper with each new interior design idea.

Paint

Paint is a tale as old as time and has been a highly dependable way to freshen up your space and give your house a new look. However, it’s an ever changing technology that you should read up on if you’re deciding between wallpaper and paint.

Cost

Paint is a significantly cheaper option for house updates, especially if you’re looking to cover the surface area of more than one wall or room. Depending on the type of paint you want, high-gloss, semi-gloss, satin, eggshell or matte also makes a difference in price. Either way, if you’re looking to cover a large area while staying within a budget, paint is a terrific idea.

Durability

There are many things that could tarnish the clean look of a fresh coat of paint. Brush stroke marks, chips and other visible imperfections can happen often on a painted surface. The bright side of paint is that fixing these blemishes takes mere minutes. Just quickly paint over it with the same color, let it dry and it should be good as new.

Selection

For those not interested in patterns and accent walls with intricate designs, paint is a great option. For a sleek, elegant, single-color look, don’t look any further than paint. There are thousands of different colors to choose from, and if you get an inkling for something different, you can always freehand designs – the best part being if they don’t work out, all you need to do is paint over it!

There is no real distinction between which is better, wallpaper or paint, choose whichever one feels best for you and your situation. That being said, if you like the look of both, consider painting some areas of your house and applying wallpaper to others. For either of our services, wallpaper or paint, give us a call today!
